The Truth About Lash Adhesives

What we’re about to say might sound very controversial, but it’s time to face facts. If you notice that your adhesive isn’t working properly, ensure that you’ve met all the criteria the product requires for it to perform at its best.

First, did you select the correct adhesive according to your experience?

When purchasing lash adhesive, many lash artists are looking for the strongest and the fastest, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that it will be the best one for you.  The strongest adhesives usually means the fastest drying, so here is where the trouble lies. If you normally take 3-5 seconds to place a lash or fan but you are using an adhesive that dries in 0.5 - 1 second, then the adhesive is not going to work for you!  It’s going to dry en route to the natural lash and won’t even stick to the natural lash. To start, we always recommend selecting an adhesive that is slower drying, like the M.INT Pro Elite Adhesive as this will give you a little more time to work.  It will still do its job well, it’s just that it will better suit you and your level of experience at the moment.  Once you gain more experience, you can select a faster drying adhesive such as the M.INT Clear Adhesive!

Second, are your environment conditions under control?

We hear all too often that your adhesive was working fine before, and suddenly it’s not working anymore.  This means that something has changed in your environment, it’s rarely the adhesive.

What is the humidity in your working environment?  What’s the temperature set to?  Do you know the ideal conditions for the adhesive you’re using?  Keep in mind that depending on the season and time of day, these environments can affect your adhesive performance.  We also recommend using a hygrometer to monitor your room, in case you need to make some adjustments.  Check out M.INT’s Hygrometer here!  Also, your supplier is always available with any type of questions regarding your adhesive.

Lastly, are you taking good care of your glue and storing it properly?

If you’re not taking care of your glue, you shouldn’t be surprised if your adhesive comes out gloopy or the nozzle gets clogged.  When it comes to your glue, you should always do the following:

  • After every use, always clean the bottle nozzle with a lint free wipe
  • Keep the container in a cool, dry place such as an opaque tea or coffee tin and store the bottle upright.
  • After you shake your glue, remove the lid and make sure you burp your bottle! Squeeze the bottle gently to get out that little bit of adhesive.  Use a lint-free wipe to remove any excess glue around the nozzle and rim of the lid.
  • Are you replacing your adhesive within the recommended time frame?  Generally, we always have the mentality to use something up before replacing it.  But with adhesives, they polymerize over time from being exposed to air (Check out our blog on Polymerization!).  So if your glue has been opened, but has taken over 3 months to use entirely, it’s time to replace it.
  • Finally, are you using the correct amount of glue?  Not all adhesives are the same; some adhesives are more liquid than others, so you may need to pick up more product on the lash extension than if you were working with an adhesive with a thicker consistency.  With experience, you will grow to understand how different adhesives work as you use your glue more frequently.

So, going through the info above, what is your conclusion?  It might take some work to know everything about your adhesives, but if you want that relationship to last, it will be worth it in the end.
